While the EU AI Act fully comes into force this August, the reality of children's online world is changing faster than any legislation can respond. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has become an omnipresent part of children's digital lives, whether through chatbots, personalized content, or image and text creation tools. While AI offers immense opportunities for learning and creativity, it also introduces unprecedented risks that demand an immediate and coordinated response from parents, schools, and technology companies.
Data shows that children and adolescents adopt generative AI tools much faster than adults. For example, in the US, 58% of children aged 12–18 reported using ChatGPT, compared to only 30% of parents. In Europe, up to seven out of ten children use some form of generative AI. This rapid adoption has significant impacts, manifesting in several key areas:
Protecting children in the age of generative AI requires a proactive approach and collaboration. It's not enough to simply ban; it's essential to educate and equip children with critical thinking tools.

I recall a conversation with a primary school principal. She mentioned a teacher confiding in her about one of her students, twelve-year-old Peter, who had started withdrawing. Instead of playing with friends, he spent hours with a new AI chatbot. At first, it seemed harmless – Peter chatted about school projects. But soon, he began confiding his worries, feelings of loneliness, and even asking the chatbot for advice on bullying. The teacher noticed Peter stopped seeking human contact, and his reliance on AI became alarming. This story showed me how quickly the line between a tool and a companion can blur, and how crucial it is for children to understand that AI, while helpful, can never replace real human relationships and empathy.
If we fail to actively address the challenges posed by generative AI, we risk our children growing up in a digital environment rife with misinformation, manipulation, and potential emotional dependency. The consequences can be severe: impaired critical thinking development, increased anxiety and depression due to unrealistic ideals, or even exposure to inappropriate and harmful content. Without clear guidance, children may become passive content consumers instead of active creators, losing the ability to distinguish truth from fiction, with long-term impacts on their social, emotional, and cognitive development.
